את הראיון עם ברני והילה קיימנו לפני כחודש, וחודש, מסתבר, הוא זמן מספיק לשינויים: ענבל ילדה את ביתה הבכורה והפכה את הילה וברני לסבא-סבתא נרגשים. מזל טוב מכולנו לכל שבט ג'נסן-שומרוני !

מי במשפחה
הילה (61) נולדה כאן, בראש הנקרה. בת לעמוס ואביבה שומרוני ז"ל שהגיעו לקיבוץ בשנת 1951 במסגרת גרעין "הכשרת גשר זיו". כאן נולדו להם: זיו, אמיר, הילה, ועודד.
ברני (63) נולד וגדל בבריסביין שבמדינת קווינסלנד, אוסטרליה. אמו של ברני, אחותו ואחיו עדיין מתגוררים באוסטרליה.
ורד (27) לומדת משפטים באוסטרליה.
ענבל (24) מדריכת פילאטיס מכשירים, נשואה , גרה בתל אביב, וצפויה ללדת ממש בקרוב את ביתה הבכורה, נכדתם הבכורה של ברני והילה...
רוני (19) מתחילה ללמוד משפטים, נשואה וגרה בקצרין.
למה דווקא ראש הנקרה
ברני, שמגיע ממשפחה נוצרית, נהג מתוך סקרנות לקרוא בתנ"ך. העניין בתנ"ך, הסקרנות, והרצון להגיע לארץ הקודש הובילו אותו להגיע לישראל כמתנדב בשנת 1989. הוא נשלח לגשר הזיו, אבל מפספס את תחנת האוטובוס… ומגיע לבראש הנקרה.
"אני הייתי אז כבר אחרי טיול של אחרי צבא" מספרת הילה. "ברני עבד על מכונת שטיפת הכלים, וכל הבנות התלהבו ממנו... איזה ערב בפאב התחלנו לדבר, ומשם הכל התחיל".
3 חודשים מאוחר יותר ברני נסע ללונדון כדי להתקבל לעבודה בנפט במדינות ערב. הוא קיבל עבודה בעירק ולמשך שנתיים היה עובד חודשיים בעירק, מגיע לחודש חופש, ושוב חוזר לעירק לחודשיים.
בזמן מלחמת המפרץ (1991) ברני וחבריו לעבודה היו בדירה בבגדד כשהעירקים לא נותנים להם להמשיך לעבוד אבל גם לא נותנים להם לצאת מהמדינה, ולא ליצור קשר עם משפחותיהם. "חצי שנה שלא ידעתי מה קורה איתו. זאת הייתה תקופה ממש קשה" מספרת הילה. אחרי חצי שנה הגיע הטלפון המיוחל - ברני התקשר שהוא בלונדון. לקונוסול האוסטרלי שקיבל את פניו וביקש לדעת לאן הוא רוצה לטוס, ענה ברני בלי להסס - "לישראל". משנרגעו רוחות המלחמה חזר ברני לעבודתו בארצות ערב, ורק אחרי שנתיים, לבקשתה של הילה, סיים שם וחזר לקיבוץ.
ב 1994 הם נישאים, וב 1995 עוזבים את הקיבוץ ונוסעים לאוסטרליה כדי שברני יוכל ללמוד. ברני עבד במכרות ולמד, ורד נולדה, ואחרי 5 שנים הגעגועים לקיבוץ ולמשפחה, הבנה שאין כמו קיבוץ לגדל בו את הילדים, והרצון לחיות בקרבת המשפחה המורחבת, מכריעים והם מחליטים לחזור לראש הנקרה.
הילה השתלבה בעבודה בגני הילדים וכעבור כמה שנים התחילה לעבוד בכולבו. את 17 שנות העבודה שלה בכולבו קטעה מלחמת חרבות ברזל - יומיים אחרי הפינוי גם הכולבו נסגר. כיום עובדת הילה במפעל זוטא הפועל כאן אצלנו במה שהיה פעם המטבח.
ברני עשה תעודת חשמלאי מוסמך ומאז עובד במט"ש (מכון טיהור שפכים) נהריה.
הפינוי והחזרה הביתה
את תקופת הפינוי התחילה המשפחה בקצרין. הם התארחו אצל משפחתו של בן זוגה (היום כבר בעלה) של רוני, כשברני נוסע וחוזר כל יום לעבודה. אחרי חודש וחצי, משהבינו שהמצב הולך להתארך, עברו למלון לאונרדו בטבריה שם שהו באותה עת רבים מתושבי ראש הנקרה.
הילה התחברה ומאוד נהנתה מהחבורה שהתגבשה במלון. יחד נסעו לטיולים, שמעו הרצאות, וחיזקו אחד את השני. רוני למדה בבית הספר בקצרין, ענבל ניהלה ולימדה בסטודיו לפילאטיס בכרמיאל, ברני נסע הלוך חזור לעבודה, וורד הקדימה את הטיסה המתוכננת שלה ללימודים באוסטרליה.
באפריל נסעה הילה עם רוני וענבל לבקר את ורד באוסטרליה. כשחזרו כבר חיכה להן חדר במלון בנהריה אליו עברו חברי החבורה המגובשת מהמלון בטבריה.
"בנהריה לא היתה פעילות כמו שהיתה לנו במלון בטבריה" מספרת הילה, "וחלק מהחברים כבר חזרו לעבוד. הרגשתי שזה גם הזמן הנכון עבורי לחזור לעבודה והשתלבתי ב"זוטא" כאן בקיבוץ".
"רוני היתה צריכה להתגייס בדצמבר 2024 והציבה לנו עובדה שעד אז אנחנו חוזרים הביתה. היא הודיעה שהיא לא מוכנה ביציאות מהצבא להגיע לבית מלון, אלא רק הביתה. שמענו בקולה ובאוקטובר 2024 חזרנו, הרבה לפני החזרה הרשמית". הילה מספרת כי הם לא חששו. יש להם ממד בבית, ובסה"כ בנהריה היה מפחיד אפילו יותר מאשר בראש הנקרה.
רוני התגייסה לצבא, ענבל עזבה לתל אביב. הקן התרוקן, אבל המשפחה התרחבה - ב 2025 גם רוני וגם ענבל נישאו לבני זוגן.
תחביבים ודברים שמרחיבים את הלב
ברני מספר בהתרגשות ובגאווה על המפגשים המשפחתיים שהם מארחים אצלם על המרפסת ששלושת הבנות נמצאות ו"אחת אופה, אחת על הסלטים, אחת עוזרת לארגן…זה עושה את הלב שלי מלא" מספר ברני (בעברית המיוחדת שלו שערכנו מעט לטובת הקוראים).
"זה הכיף שלנו" מוסיפה הילה "שאנחנו יכולים לארח כאן את כל המשפחה. אנחנו גם מאוד אוהבים לטייל - טיולים ומסעדות. מנצלים כל הזדמנות".
בעבר היה ברני נוהג להשתתף בשעורי התנ"ך שמעביר רב המועצה. כיום שעות העבודה מקשות עליו אבל הוא מקפיד להמשיך להצטרף לתפילות בחגים, ולקרוא בפרשת השבוע. "ברני אמנם לא עשה גיור אבל הוא יודע הרבה יותר מכולנו" מספרת הילה. "עשרת הדברות הן הבסיס לכל, משם הכל צמח" מסביר לנו ברני.
מוטו לחיים
"לשמור על הראש שלי למטה כדי לצאת מצרה" אומר ברני, וכשאנחנו רוצות לוודא שאנחנו מבינות למה הוא מתכוון הוא נותן לנו את גרסת המקור: "Keep my head down to stay out of trouble". ובחצי צחוק מסביר "כשאתה בבית עם 4 בנות, אתה צריך לדעת להתנהג בחוכמה….".. משקצת יותר התעקשנו הבנו ממנו שהכוונה היא בעיקר להיות צנוע, להתעסק בענייניך ולא בעניינם של אחרים.
מה אתם אוהבים בראש הנקרה
"אני אוהב לשבת על הדק ולשמוע את רעש הילדים מגן המשחקים, או שהם נוסעים על אופניים במדרכות, את ההורים שמגיעים עם הילדים" מספר ברני "זה נותן לי הרגשה טובה. אי אפשר לשבת כל הזמן מול הנוף המדהים של הים והשדות כשהחיים עצמם בגב שלך. גם אם הילדים רבים או יש צעקות, זה לא מפריע לי. הרעש הזה הוא רעש של הקהילה כשהיא גדלה וצומחת".
מבחינת הילה הקיבוץ הוא בית "זה משהו שאני לא ארגיש בשום מקום" היא אומרת. וגם מציינת שזה שהישוב עכשיו, למרות הפינוי והמלחמה, מלא אנשים, ותיקים, חדשים וזמניים, נותן הרגשה מאוד טובה.
ראש הנקרה חוגגת 77, מה תאחלו לה/לנו
הילה מאחלת שנמשיך לצמוח ולהתחזק. שנמשיך לקבל אלינו בחיבוק אנשים חדשים שמצטרפים לקהילה, שנדע לשמור על זה. ברני מאחל שנקפיד לכבד אחד את השני ופחות נתערב בחייהם של אחרים במה שלא מענייננו.
מה לעצמכם אתם מאחלים
"רק בריאות" פותח ברני והילה מצטרפת אליו "בריאות כמובן, ואני מאחלת לנו שנהנה מהשקט שיש לנו יחד במהלך השבוע, ומההמולה שיש לנו בסופו כשהמשפחה נפגשת, ושנהנה מהתרחבות המשפחה" מה שמזכיר לברני את האזכרה שעשו לפני שבועיים לעמוס ואביבה ז"ל: "ענבל היתה, אשתו של אוהד היתה, ובת דודה של הילה - כולן צריכות ללדת".

Who in the Family
Hila (61) was born here in Rosh Hanikra, daughter of Amos and Aviva Shomroni z"l who arrived at the kibbutz in 1951 as part of the "Geshar Ziv Training" nucleus. Here were born to them: Ziv, Amir, Hila, and Oded.
Bernie (63) was born and raised in Brisbane in the state of Queensland, Australia. Bernie's mother, his sister, and his brother still live in Australia.
Vered (27) is studying law in Australia.
Inbal (24) is a Pilates equipment instructor, married, lives in Tel Aviv, and is expected to give birth very soon to her first daughter, their first granddaughter for Bernie and Hila.
Roni (19) is starting to study law, married, and lives in Katzrin.
Why Rosh Hanikra
Bernie, who comes from a Christian family, used to read the Bible out of curiosity. The interest in the Bible, the curiosity, and the desire to reach the Holy Land led him to come to Israel as a volunteer in 1989. He was sent to Gesher Haziv, but he missed the bus stop... and arrived at Rosh Hanikra.
"I was already after a post-army trip," Hila recounts. "Bernie worked on the dishwashing machine, and all the girls were excited about him... One evening at the pub, we started talking, and from there everything began."
3 months later, Bernie traveled to London to get accepted for work in oil in Arab countries. He got a job in Iraq, and for two years he worked two months in Iraq, came for a month of vacation, and returned to Iraq for two months.
During the Gulf War (1991), Bernie and his work colleagues were in an apartment in Baghdad when the Iraqis wouldn't let them continue working but also wouldn't let them leave the country or contact their families. "Half a year that I didn't know what was happening with him, it was a really difficult period," Hila recounts.
After half a year, the longed-for phone call arrived - Bernie called that he was in London. The Australian consul who received him asked where he wanted to fly to, Bernie answered without hesitation - "To Israel."
When the winds of war calmed, Bernie returned to his work in Arab countries, and only after two years, at Hila's request, he finished there and returned to the kibbutz.
In 1994 they got married, in 1995 they left the kibbutz and traveled to Australia so that Bernie could study. Bernie worked in mines and studied, Vered was born, and after 5 years, the longings for the kibbutz and the family, the understanding that there's no place like a kibbutz to raise children in, and the desire to live near the extended family prevailed, and they decided to return to Rosh Hanikra.
Hila integrated into work in the children's gardens, and after a few years started working in the Kibbutz's shop. Her 17 years of work in the Kibbutz's shop were interrupted by the 7 October 2023 war - two days after the evacuation, the shop also closed. Today, Hila works at the Zuta Dellicatsen factory that operates here with us in what used to be the kitchen.
Bernie got a certified electrician certificate and since then has been working at the Nahariya STP (Sewage Treatment Plant).
On the Evacuation and Return Home
The family started the evacuation period in Katzrin. They stayed with the family of her partner's (today already her husband) of Roni, while Bernie travels back and forth to work every day. After a month and a half, when they realized the situation was going to drag on, they moved to the Leonardo Hotel in Tiberias, where many residents of Rosh Hanikra were staying at that time.
Hila connected and really enjoyed the group that formed at the hotel. Together they went on trips, listened to lectures, and strengthened each other.
Roni studied at the school in Katzrin, Inbal managed and taught at a Pilates studio in Karmiel, Bernie traveled back and forth to work, and Vered advanced her planned flight to studies in Australia.
In April, Hila traveled with Roni and Inbal to visit Vered in Australia. When they returned, a room was already waiting for them at the hotel in Nahariya, to which the cohesive group from the hotel in Tiberias moved.
"In Nahariya there wasn't activity like we had at the hotel in Tiberias," Hila recounts, "and some of the friends had already returned to work. I felt that this was also the right time for me to return to work, and I integrated into Zuta Dellicatsen factory here in the kibbutz."
"Roni was supposed to join the Army in December 2024, and she presented us with a fact that by then we are returning home. She informed us that she is not willing in leaves from the army to arrive at a hotel, but only home. In October 2024, we returned much before the official return." Hila recounts that they were not afraid. They have a Cement safety room in the house, and overall in Nahariya it was even scarier than in Rosh Hanikra.
Roni joined the Army, Inbal left for Tel Aviv. The nest emptied, but the family expanded - in 2025 both Roni and Inbal married their partners.
Hobbies and Things That Expand the Heart
Bernie recounts with excitement and pride about the family gatherings they host on their balcony where the three daughters are present and "one bakes, one on the salads, one helps organize... this makes my heart full," Bernie recounts (in his special Hebrew that we edited a bit for the readers).
"This is our fun," Hila adds, "that we can host the whole family here. We also really love to travel - trips and restaurants. We take advantage of every opportunity."
In the past, Bernie used to participate in the Bible lessons taught by the council rabbi. Today, work hours make it difficult for him, but he makes sure to continue joining prayers on holidays and reading the weekly portion.
"Bernie didn't convert, but he knows much more than all of us," Hila recounts. "The Ten Commandments are the basis for everything, from there everything grew," Bernie explains to us.
Motto for Life
"Keep my head down to stay out of trouble." And with half a laugh explains "when you're at home with 4 girls, you need to know how to behave... wisely." When we insisted a bit more, we understood from him that the intention is mainly to be humble, to deal with your own affairs and not with those of others.
What Do You Love in Rosh Hanikra
"I love sitting on the deck and hearing the noise of the children from the playground or them riding bicycles on the sidewalks, the parents arriving with the children," Bernie recounts. "This gives me a good feeling. You can't sit all the time facing the amazing view of the sea and the fields when life itself is behind you. Even if the children fight or there are shouts, it doesn't bother me. This noise is the noise of the community as it grows and flourishes."
For Hila, the kibbutz is home. "This is something I won't feel anywhere," she says, and also notes that now the settlement, despite the evacuation and the war, is full of people, veterans, new, and temporary, gives a very good feeling.
Rosh Hanikra Celebrates 77, What Do You Wish for It?
Hila wishes that we continue to grow and strengthen, that we continue to receive new people joining the community with a hug, that we know how to preserve this. Bernie wishes that we make sure to respect each other and interfere less in the lives of others in what doesn't concern us.
And What Will You Wish for Yourselves for the Future?
"Only health," Bernie opens, and Hila joins him. "Health, of course, and I wish us to enjoy the quiet we have together during the week and the hustle we have at its end when the family meets, and that we enjoy the family expansion." Which reminds Bernie of the memorial they held two weeks ago for Amos and Aviva z"l: "Inbal was, Ohad's wife was, and Hila's cousin - all need to give birth."
It seems there's nothing more fitting than to conclude the interview with such joyful news!
